The Long Tail

The aspect of the new marketplace is a curious one. What we covered in our last class regarding the continuous leveling out of popularity of products seems counter intuitive to me. I would think that the popularity of the majority of products would be eventually diminished to zero. How can there remain a product popularity for a completely outdated product. For example the popularity of 8Track tapes has been consistently reduced down to almost zero, and will arguably continue to decline due to the constant advancement of music technology.
The other topic discussed on the same day was the idea of the business world being flat. This makes sense. Due to the constant increase in IT communication and knowledge is constantly being spread, creating a more informed buyer, and no acceptance of the word scarcity.
